What a lot of events to fit into a short space of time. This half term has been jam-packed with fun and work in equal measure.

The French Day was really encouraging, with students practising their French and having a go. There were special lessons and French stories, a midday meal together of croque monsieur and tartes aux fruits, and other enjoyment. The students have made great progress in ability and confidence in one year.

For Sports Day we joined with Covenant Christian School and much hilarity ensued. There was great camaraderie and some excellent competition.

The Lower School visited the Museum of Science and Industry and their eyes and their minds were alight with interest.

The Junior School were aided to prepare some platform and music events for Junior Student Convention (JESC) which we travelled over to Dewsbury in Yorkshire to compete against and share with Branch School. The performances were really moving and successful.

A great end of term treat was had at the velodrome when the Upper School went BMXing and moguls and ramps and various things that this typist didn’t quite understand were a great delight to the students who participated.

Summer Banquet and Graduation have been lovely. As usual we had some wonderful guests, friends of the school and family and one family were able to travel from Canada! The day was very blessed. The worship was led by 2 of the Seniors and one of the Junior students and very well done. The food was delicious and beautiful in great abundance – a real banquet. The performances were excellent. It was superlative. We had a few graduations also. There was a Preschool class, ABCs, Year 8 and ICCE General Certificate graduation. We fellowshipped together, worshipped together, ate and drank together and laughed and cried together (yes, at least one of the performances was that good). A great way to finish the school year.

We are so proud of our students. The whole school worked together fundraising to send four seniors for a week over the Easter holiday to European Student Convention. The students ran 1,200 m several times a week from January until the end of March and the collective effort was the equivalent of running from Manchester to Brussels. The students who went did not disappoint their fellow fundraisers.  We are delighted with the results below.  Added to this, the students’ behaviour was exemplary and they made many friends and had a great week away at Millfield in Somerset. This is a beautiful setting with Olympic standard accommodation, a theatre and a concert hall.

Four students entered 41 events and won 25 medals:

9 Bronzes

9 Silvers

7 Golds and one plaque.

Academics: Social Studies Exhibit (bronze); Bible Bowl, Linear PowerPoint (silver)

Christian Service: Golden Lamp (3 x bronze, 1 x silver)

Platform: Poetry Recitation (1 x gold), Preaching (1 x gold)

Sport: Long Jump, 100m (1 x silver), 200 m (1x silver, 1x gold), 4 x 100m (1 x silver), (Football (1 x bronze, 2 x silver), Soccer Kick (1 x silver), Badminton, Basketball (2 x bronze), Shot Put, Table Tennis, Physical Fitness (1 x bronze, 1 x silver),

Won 6 medals: 4 bronze, 1 silver, 1 gold

Won 5 medals: 2 bronze, 1 silver, 2 gold

Won 5 medals: 1 bronze, 3 silver, 1 gold

Won 9 medals: 2 bronze, 4 silver, 3 gold (and a plaque for preaching)

The school came together with parents and governors to praise God.  The Seniors lead worship with their band and we enjoyed eating loads of different cakes. We asked some of the students afterwards what they liked best and they had been really excited by praying together with the parents.

The students brought a selection of vegetables (which we made into a meal and ate together), crazy fruit (which they all tried) and food for the food bank.  We have arranged a trip to the food bank to see the work that people are doing in communities in Manchester.  Our harvest festival assembly included a presentation on the farming year in the North West, a powerpoint of harvest, as well as poems read by students and all of us worshiping God together.  The photos of Autumn above were taken by the students in the playground.

It was great to think about British culture and to compare it to some of the cultures we have been looking at recently.  We have been continuing with our Chinese lessons with Qi Jie and, in connection with Science lessons based on sound, the students visited the audiology department of the MRI and the students were all very excited to be speaking silently when we welcomed Mrs Coupe who taught the children British Sign Language.

These are not the only languages that we have been studying, however, Miss Judson continues to introduce us to simple Arabic and the customs she was brought up with as she grew up in Lebanon, Egypt, and Cyprus.  Some of the pictures she showed us explained how different or similar our cultures are.

Mr and Mrs Golamhossen were able to share their stories of a summer in Mauritius, where they had gone to visit their family and friends. They showed photos of the friendly hospitality they received from them and explained how the Muslim culture places great importance on being generous and welcoming.

In a very interesting contrast, our former Head Girl, Karan, came to visit us and joined us for assembly.  We asked her to talk a little bit about life after her degree in Japanese.  Karan told us about moving to Japan and the big differences in culture between England and Japan.  She explained how being isolated as a community can lead to being fearful of other people.  She talked about the different religions of Japan and some of the history. She also spoke about the food, the amazing punctuality and many interesting details of her life for the last few months as she has moved out to Japan.  We were very blessed to have her come in to see school during her 5 day visit to England.  Thank you, Karan!

One of our students’ favourite cultural ‘lessons’ was the most recent.  Last week we were saying goodbye to our Swiss exchange students from La Bergerie Christian school, near lake Geneva.  We had welcomed them with tea and traditional English cakes and brave chats over table tennis and table football.  On their last day they asked if they could come in to pray for our school.  Their teenagers all prayed for us and shared precious things with us.  Our students responded by asking if they could pray for them too.  It was lovely.  We are very grateful to Covenant Christian School for opening up this opportunity of generously sharing the exchange visitors with us.  The students enjoyed using their French.

Graduating from the Infants

Infant Performances as part of our final assemblies and end of year productions.  School performances included showcasing French songs from French lessons, recorder recitals from recorder lessons and piano and singing recitals from piano lessons with our peripatetic piano teacher.

Several students made lighthouses and our themed song of the year was Rend Collective’s ‘My Lighthouse’.

The green-fingered Infants have been very busy and successful this term.  There are tomatoes, beans, chillis, lavender and various other interesting plants here.  We’re looking forward to an activity day with Covenant Christian School this week, followed by our annual Summer Banquet.   We have friends old and new coming to eat, fellowship and enjoy the children’s performances.  They’ll probably get a good opportunity to enjoy the lovely displays that the Infants, Preschool and Juniors have been working on.
